Mechanical Design Engineer, Rotor-Dynamics

Zunum Aero has an opening for an experienced mechanical designer in rotating machinery to assist in the development of quiet electric propulsors.  Candidate must have at least 10 years mechanical design experience, preferably in aerospace with either turbomachinery or electric machines for aerospace applications.

Zunum is an emerging leader in hybrid-electric propulsion for aircraft; this position is a unique opportunity to work with a small, dynamic team of dedicated engineers on the next generation of aircraft propulsion.  Position is full time, initial location is flexible, with likely long-term relocation to Illinois or Washington state; compensation DOE.

Roles and Responsibilities:

Tasks include, but are not limited to:

  • Lead the mechanical integration of the electric drive motor with a ducted fan including any associated linkages and gearing.

  • Conduct multi disc rotor analysis for the electric machine including analysis of vibrational modes of operation, life cycle design and analysis of rotating machinery

  • Develop system design loads for fan and motor mounting including influence of the flight environment coupled with the frequency domain.

  • Develop the mechanical fan-motor interface design, analysis including any need for gearing and associated cooling loads.

  • Lead the development of systems interface documents for motor, fan, nacelle and pylon

  • Contract or hire supporting engineering analysis work as necessary

  • B.S. or M.S. in mechanical or aerospace engineering

  • At least 15 years of industry experience including aerospace product development, life cycle design and analysis of rotating machinery

  • Electric machine design and analysis experience including: variable speed electric motors, rotor magnets insertion and mounting, and stator windings arrangements and cooling techniques

  • Strong communication skills, experience with team leadership, program planning and organization

  • Proficient to expert in at least one major CAD package (Solidworks or CATIA)

  • Strong skills in MS office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
